One is built for manufacturing new parts from a complete digital file. The other is built for diagnosing and repairing an existing engine or component where the extent of the problem isn’t known until someone looks at it. Confusing the two leads to picking the wrong option for the actual work.

AT A GLANCE

Factor

Online CNC Machining

Local Engine Shop (Rutt’s)

What it needs upfront

Complete CAD file, defined tolerances

A damaged part, a symptom, or a rough sketch is enough to start

Best suited for

New parts made from a known spec

Diagnosing and repairing existing engines and components

Inspection

Verifies against your submitted file

Inspects the actual part (magnaflux, wet/dry crack detection, in-person measurement)

Handling unknowns mid-job

Requires a new file and a new order

Repair plan can be adjusted on the spot

Equipment that can’t be shipped

Not usable

Mobile and dockside service goes to the equipment

Best fit

A standard, reproducible new part

Repair, rebuild, or diagnosis of an engine or component already in service

1. What Each Option Actually Does

Online CNC machining manufactures new parts from files you supply. You upload a drawing, the platform quotes it, and a machine somewhere in a network cuts it to spec. It has no role in diagnosing a problem, because there’s no problem to diagnose. The part either matches the file or it doesn’t.

A local engine shop does something different: it evaluates a part or engine that’s already failing, wearing, or malfunctioning, and figures out what’s actually wrong before deciding whether to repair or replace it. Our technicians use wet and dry magnetic particle inspection (NDT-certified) to find cracks that aren’t visible, then decide on a repair path from there. That’s not a manufacturing step an online file upload can replace, because there’s no file yet. The inspection is the starting point.

2. Where Cost Actually Comes From

Online CNC pricing is transparent because the part is fully specified: material, cutting time, and tolerance drive the quote. If the file is right, the price is right.

Repair work doesn’t price the same way, because the cost driver isn’t cutting time, it’s uncertainty. A crankshaft that needs grinding costs differently than one that needs a full re-machine, and you often can’t tell which until it’s measured. A quote for repair work reflects inspection and the range of likely outcomes, not a fixed spec. That’s a real difference in what you’re paying for, not a knock against either model.

3. Turnaround: Why “Fast” Means Different Things

Online platforms move fast because the workflow is digital from quote to production. For a new part with no ambiguity, that speed is real.

Repair turnaround depends on something different: whether the problem is found in one visit or requires a second look after machining starts. Cast iron crack repair is a good example. Sometimes a crack runs further than initial inspection shows, and the repair plan changes accordingly, in person, without shipping the part anywhere. An online process facing the same discovery would need a new file submission and a new production slot, which adds a shipping cycle on both ends. For a job where the scope might change, in-person handling can be faster overall even though the initial file-to-quote step isn’t as instant.

4. Quality and Verification

Online CNC quality depends on machine calibration and inspection against your file, things like CMM measurement confirming the part matches spec. That works well because the target (the file) is fixed.

Repair quality depends on correctly diagnosing the problem in the first place. Cylindrical grinding on a worn crankshaft, for instance, is verified against the actual condition of the part, not an assumed dimension, since wear is rarely uniform. Rutt’s handles cranks up to 89 inches long and 27 inches in diameter this way, including large industrial cranks (Cat 3508–3516, Cummins K-series, MTU) where the original OEM spec doesn’t account for how much material a specific unit has already lost through use.

5. The One Factor That Isn’t a Trade-off: Equipment That Can’t Move

This is the clearest dividing line. A cracked V-16 industrial diesel block, a marine engine still mounted dockside, or a piece of equipment down at a remote job site can’t be shipped to a platform for machining and shipped back. Online CNC has no answer for this scenario, because its entire model assumes the part travels to the machine.

Our mobile and dockside service exists specifically for this case; the shop travels to the equipment and performs work like in-chassis cam bearing removal and installation on Cummins, Cat, and other diesel platforms without pulling the engine. When equipment can’t move, this isn’t a comparison anymore. It’s the only workable option.

How to Choose, By Situation

Your Situation

Better Starting Point

You have a complete spec for a new, standard part

Online CNC is a reasonable option

A part is cracked, worn, or failing and you don’t know the extent yet

In-person inspection, not a file upload

The equipment is too large or too immobile to ship

Mobile or dockside service

You need a mid-repair judgment call (repair vs. replace)

In-person evaluation

The engine or part has a non-standard history (modified, older, no clean spec)

In-person evaluation

The Actual Decision

If you’re manufacturing a new, fully specified part, online CNC machining is a legitimate and often faster option; that’s simply not the kind of work most engine repair involves. If you’re dealing with a crack of unknown depth, a worn crankshaft, or equipment that physically can’t be shipped anywhere, that’s diagnostic and repair work, and it depends on someone examining the actual part.

At Rutt’s, that second category is the core of what we do: engine rebuilding, crankshaft repair and rebuilding, cast iron crack repair, and dockside or mobile service when the equipment can’t come to us. If you’re not sure which category your problem falls into, describing the symptom or sending photos of the damage is enough to find out.

FAQ

If a part is already being made online, is it still worth having a local shop look at the engine?

Yes. These aren’t mutually exclusive. A shop can inspect and diagnose the engine even if a specific replacement part is already in production somewhere else. Diagnosis and part manufacturing are two separate steps.

Does a cracked block always mean replacement instead of repair?

No. It depends on the crack’s location and depth. Some cracks can be stitched or pinned rather than requiring a full block replacement, but that determination needs a direct inspection, not a remote estimate.

Is dockside or mobile service more expensive than shipping a part to be machined?

Usually not comparable at all. When equipment is too large or immobile to ship, there’s no shipping-based alternative to compare against. The real comparison is downtime avoided by having work done on-site versus downtime while equipment sits waiting for an option that doesn’t actually apply to it.

The question behind local machine shop vs. online machining isn’t which one is better; it’s which one fits the job in front of you.
